Planning an outdoor wedding in the Midwest? Here are 10 things to consider...

When you think of getting married outside, it’s likely that you imagine a gorgeous sunny day with warm, springy breezes. But reality has a way of busting our beautiful daydreams. Of course, it doesn't mean you cannot have a beautiful outdoor wedding ceremony and reception, but you do have to do some planning ahead of time to ensure our special day will be sunshine-filled.

That's why we thought it would be helpful to put together a shortlist of tips and pointers for brides who want to plan an outdoor ceremony in the Midwest.

The Best Time of The Year To Get Married

To get the most out of your wedding day, make sure you're hosting your celebration during the best weather months: June, September, and October. And if you're planning to get married in Illinois or Wisconsin, go for June or October – the weather is generally more mild and pleasant.

Don't Forget The Sunscreen

It's easy to forget sunscreen when you're busy planning all of your other important details for the big day. However, sunburn is still possible and it will make it a lot harder for you to enjoy yourself during your outdoor wedding if you don't protect your skin from the sun!

When Planning an Outdoor Wedding, Have Umbrellas Ready

Rain or shine, love is in the air! It's a Midwest tradition to get married outside, but even the best-laid plans can be dampened by a light drizzle. If you're planning an outdoor wedding, you don't have to abandon your romantic vision – you just need to include umbrellas as part of your planning.

The Right Outdoor Wedding Lighting for You

Lighting is crucial for an outdoor wedding reception. It can help create a magical evening and set the mood for a wonderful celebration. Make sure that you have enough light at your venue, but at the same time keep in mind that the light itself shouldn't be too bright or glaring. There are lots of great options to consider, from string lights to chandeliers.

Have A Backup Plan… Just In Case

While you're planning a wedding that takes place outdoors, you have to keep one thing in mind: weather. The weather can be tricky. It can change without notice, and it can wreak havoc on your day – especially if your wedding is outside.

That's why you need to prepare yourself with a backup plan like an indoor ceremony or reception area, or if you're feeling extra clever, an indoor brunch reception or something else that keeps your guests happy and entertained while the skies clear.

Ask your venue about their backup plan options! They may even be able to offer something custom that fits your needs perfectly. Additionally, they may be willing to include some complimentary services as well.

Windproof Your Wedding Ceremony

If you're planning on an outdoor ceremony and reception, you'll want to plan ahead for wind protection. Anchor your tent in place, tuck away vases and candles, and make sure all tablecloths are secure.

We strongly recommend making a list of everything that could fly away in the wind. The last thing you want is to have some decor elements knocked over while you're exchanging vows!

Wedding Food Safety

Food safety is always a concern, but especially so when it comes to outdoor weddings. This is because you are working with perishable food, and there are no four walls to keep the elements out. In addition, bugs will be present, so it is imperative that you take proper precautions to ensure that no one gets sick at such an important event.

Keep Your Guest Comfortable At All Times

If you are planning an outdoor wedding in the Midwest, you may have to have a few tricks up your sleeve to keep your guest comfortable. The temperatures can get very high or drop down low at any time. No one wants their guests to be uncomfortable or unable to enjoy themselves.

One of the things that you can do is rent air conditioners or heaters for your guests. This will help them stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. You may want to also consider having an indoor setting for the reception just in case it rains or it is too cold outside. Include various props for your ceremony, such as fans, sunglasses or parasols; to ensure your guests are more comfortable while following the exchange of your vows.
